Foundation Stage at St Joseph’s
At St Joseph’s we offer a curriculum rich in spirituality, wonder and real life experiences. With a carefully planned independent play based learning which we call ‘exploring time’ along with structured teaching time, it is our intent that all children develop physically, verbally, cognitively and
emotionally in an environment which values all cultures, communities and people.
Research proves that young children learn best when they are active. We plan for inspiring, active learning to take place every school day.
Rhyme and story is at the heart of our curriculum here at St Joseph’s as we follow the ‘Talk 4 Writing’ approach to support children to grow their imagination and become confident, independent storytellers.
Story time quickly becomes a much loved part of our school day as we expose our children to a wide array of rich, fascinating texts throughout the year. We recognise that oracy feeds into all areas of the EYFS Framework and good oracy not only improves academic outcomes but is a life skill to ensure success beyond school.
The ability to read is a fundamental life skill. Our phonics teaching takes a priority and is embedded quickly to allow children to begin learning to read quickly and efficiently.
We understand the importance of parental engagement and believe that our parents have a crucial role to play in their children’s education. We provide information sessions and direct instruction to equip parents and carers with the skills needed to support their child.
Our aim is for the children to carry their special memories of their
Foundation Stage year in their hearts as they grow up.
