Our Vision

At St Joseph’s, we believe technology is a powerful tool for learning and creativity. Grounded in our mission, “Hand in Hand with God we Learn”, our computing curriculum prepares pupils to thrive in an increasingly digital world, while helping them to grow as responsible, safe, and confident digital citizens. Our teaching reflects Catholic values of compassion, respect, and responsibility, nurturing pupils as ethical and confident digital learners.

Curriculum Intent

Our computing curriculum is designed to:

  • Develop pupils as responsible, confident, and safe digital citizens.
  • Provide a broad and balanced education covering computer science, digital literacy, and information technology.
  • Promote independence, creativity, and problem-solving through technology.
  • Embed online safety and digital safeguarding across all aspects of learning.

How We Teach Computing

Computing is taught by class teachers across all year groups. Pupils in KS1 have access to iPads, and those in KS2 use Chromebooks to explore, create, and collaborate digitally.

We follow a clear sequence of six strands:

  1. Computing systems and networks
  2. Creating media
  3. Programming A
  4. Data and information
  5. Creating media (continued)
  6. Programming B

Alongside this, pupils take part in Project Evolve online safety lessons each half term, covering topics such as privacy, respectful communication, misinformation, and cybersecurity.

What Computing Looks Like in Our Classrooms

In lessons you will see:

  • Hands-on learning with coding, animation, and digital creation
  • Opportunities for collaboration, problem-solving, and logical thinking
  • Pupils applying computing to real-world situations, such as presenting information and designing digital projects
  • Creativity integrated across subjects, linking computing with English, maths, science, art, and music
  • Regular revisiting of skills and knowledge to build confidence and mastery

Impact – What Our Pupils Achieve

By the time they leave St Joseph’s, our pupils are able to:

  • Progress from simple algorithms in KS1 to more complex coding in KS2
  • Use technology creatively and independently to explore, design, and present their ideas
  • Understand how to keep themselves and others safe online
  • Apply computing skills across the curriculum and in everyday life
  • Enjoy learning with technology and feel confident as digital learners
