Art
Curriculum Intent
At St Joseph’s Catholic Voluntary Academy, we believe that art is a powerful way for children to explore their creativity, express their individuality and develop confidence in their own ideas. Hand in hand with God, Our Lady and St Joseph, we encourage every child to use their imagination, take creative risks and celebrate the unique gifts that God has given them.
Our Art curriculum inspires children to become curious, creative and reflective artists. Through exciting and engaging learning experiences, pupils develop a wide range of artistic skills while exploring the work of diverse artists, cultures and traditions. They learn that art is not only about creating beautiful work but also about communicating ideas, solving problems and expressing emotions.
We provide high-quality, progressive learning opportunities that build knowledge and skills from the Early Years through to Year 6. Children experiment with a variety of media, techniques and processes, developing increasing independence and resilience as they refine their artistic skills.
Throughout the year, our dedicated Art Weeks provide opportunities for children to immerse themselves in creative projects, celebrate their achievements and share their work with the wider school community. Our curriculum also reflects our Catholic faith by exploring themes inspired by the Gospel and Catholic Social Teaching, encouraging children to use creativity to appreciate God’s world and consider how art can promote dignity, community and care for creation.
Through our Art curriculum, children will:
-
develop creativity, imagination and confidence
-
master a range of artistic techniques using different media
-
explore and respond to the work of significant artists, designers and craftspeople
-
communicate ideas, emotions and experiences through art
-
reflect on and evaluate their own work and the work of others
-
celebrate their achievements within school and the wider community
By the time our pupils leave St Joseph’s, they will have the confidence, knowledge and skills to express themselves creatively, appreciate the richness of artistic expression and continue their journey as lifelong learners and creators.
