History at St. Joseph’s – Our Intent

At St. Joseph’s, we aim to bring History to life in a way that inspires curiosity and a love of learning. History is taught through themed Curriculum Weeks, where children explore big questions that help them understand people, places and events from the past and their relevance today.

Our History curriculum is designed to help children make connections between the past, present and future. We teach topics in chronological order and revisit key knowledge regularly to help children deepen their understanding over time. Our key concepts help children to build on prior learning through exploring:

Concept 1: What are they known for? Famous people, events, architecture

Concept 2: Who was in charge? Social structure of the period studied

Concept 3: What is the lasting legacy? How they era is remembered

Lessons are enriched with trips, visitors, artefacts and high-quality texts to make learning memorable and meaningful.

We place a strong emphasis on vocabulary and encourage children to talk and think like Historians. Our enquiry-based approach promotes critical thinking, discussion, and investigation, helping children to ask thoughtful questions and develop their own ideas.

Through our teaching, we also make links with Catholic Social Teaching and our children’s journey of faith—encouraging them to reflect on how historical events and figures relate to justice, equality, and community.

By the time children leave St. Joseph’s, they will have the skills and knowledge to approach History with confidence and curiosity, ready for the next stage of their learning.
